'ONCE' - A solo show by Mel Evans

Brush Gallery is very excited to be hosting a solo exhibition of new
paintings by Mel Evans. This new body of work features androgynous
figures painted in oil on linen and will run in the gallery throughout
December.

Mel says, “’Once’ is about the beauty of androgyny and queerness, the
courage of those who paved the way for the freedom of expression we
are seeing today and the quiet strength of femininity”

Mel Evans is a freelance artist specialising in figurative works. Mel
paints using oils in a predominantly realistic way and takes inspiration
from unusual and contrasting light and in trying to capture a feel or
emotion through a look or expression. Lately, Mel has come to
compositionally abstract areas of a figure or figures. Using white light
and the exposed stretched linen that she paints upon, she highlights
the colours and positioning of the anatomy, in an attempt to capture
the intimacy and memory of a moment shared or experienced.
Mel has exhibited her highly collectable artwork throughout the UK.
She lives and works in Brighton.

Air Play

Air Play

'A joy from start to finish, Air Play will entrance children and act as a great reset button for stressed adults.’ Sydney Morning Herald

This Christmas, enter a world of flying umbrellas, giant kites floating over the audience, and the biggest snow globe you’ve ever seen.

Air Play brings to life the very air we breathe, weaving together breathtaking circus, comedy and dazzling scenic effects for a family show that captures both the wonder and the excitement of the season.

Two siblings set out on an unforgettable adventure in which the ordinary is transformed into the extraordinary, and air, wind and space become agents of astonishment. In epic set-pieces of uncommon beauty, fabrics dance in the wind, balloons have a mind of their own, and confetti turns into the night sky. Through it all, laugh-out-loud comedy is never far away.

With visual images seemingly sewn from the sky, this poetic ode to childhood will enchant and electrify both the young and the young-at-heart. So come ride the wind and see your wildest dreams take flight.

‘Air Play holds the whole audience in the palm of its outstretched hand’ British Theatre Guide

The Nutcracker Suite and The Snowman (With Live Orchestra)

The Nutcracker Suite and The Snowman (With Live Orchestra)

Two seasonal favourites come together in this special Christmas event. The story of The Nutcracker is brought to life with a special narration read by CBeebies own Pui Fan Lee, accompanied by beautiful, newly created illustrations. This is
followed by the magical film The Snowman, screened with a live performance of Walking in The Air, the soundtrack to every child's Christmas. Both pieces are accompanied throughout by the SouthBank Sinfonia (conducted by Ben Palmer). The perfect way to begin your celebrations.

Now in its 15th year, the Southbank Sinfonia is a young, dynamic ensemble with a growing international reputation. The Independent described it as "a hugely talented young ensemble whose performances are always theatrical". As they
perform a suite from Tchaikovsky's evergreen ballet, the story will be brought to life with Pui Fan Lee narrating from a new script.

To complement the narration, a set of beautiful illustrations will be shown on screen. Created by Emily Carew Woodard, her distinctive style and affinity for fables and stories made her a perfect partner for this project. Raymond Briggs’ original 1978 book The Snowman led to the now more famous 1982 animated film of the same title with
the score by Howard Blake, and of course Walking in the Air has become every child's soundtrack for Christmas. The song will be heard live in both performances, and the film shown on screen to live orchestral accompaniment. The setting of the film is local to Brighton: the Royal Pavilion and the Palace Pier can clearly be seen in the flying scene.

Sexy @ The Basement - Brighton Dome

“Oi, you. Sentient flesh owner. Do you think you're sexy? What do you find sexy? What does sexy even mean?”

As a young woman who loves poetry and smashing the patriarchy, this has been a question that has plagued writer/performer Vanessa Kisuule her whole life. Sexy uses truthful wit and clever verse to explore our conflicted relationship with our bodies and sexiness, exploring our obsession with what is sexy through comedy, spoken word, dance and various states of undress.

Kisuule will also host a separate workshop event at The Basement on Sat 18 Nov, 12pm. A fun, relaxed and explorative workshop around the word Sexy and what on earth that means. A word constantly shoved down our throats by media and culture: what relationship do you have to it personally?

Through movement, dance and writing, participants will get to delve deep into this topic. No previous writing or dance experience necessary - just come with open minds, hearts and
hips.

Fri 17 - Sat 18 Nov, 7.30pm
Post-show discussion Fri 17 Nov

Miss Represented @ The Attenborough Centre

Miss Represented is a Brighton Dome project that works with young women who face challenging life situations, using the arts to explore life experiences gaining a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.

This year the group of 12 young women aged 13-21 have been working to create Can You See Me Now? A body of work which follows the experiences of those often unheard, finding their way through life, inviting audiences to see the world through their eyes. A cross-art performance combining theatre, film, spoken word and music, Can You See Me Now? explores the experiences of the young women as they go through school, the care system or contact with Social Services. It examines our inner and outer worlds, cycles of holding it together, saying you’re fine, until everything crumbles, and how we build ourselves back up again.

Can You See Me Now? will be touring to schools and pupil referral units, as well as public performances at The Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts (9 Nov), The Basement (24 & 25 Nov) The show is pay what you choose, but advance booking is required.
