DIFFERENCES - Featuring a talk by esteemed artist Alison Lapper

  • St Andrew's Church Waterloo Street Hove, BN3 1AQ United Kingdom (map)

Sunday Assembly Brighton are excited to announce that the guest speaker for this month is Alison Lapper MBE, the disabled British artist who was famously featured on Trafalgar Square’s fourth plinth from 2005-2007, as the subject of the sculpture ‘Alison Lapper Pregnant’. She appears regularly with her now-teenage son in the TV documentary ‘Child of our Time’ and is a prolific advocate for disabled people’s rights.

Born without arms and shortened legs and institutionalised from birth, Alison was almost unaware of her severe disability until early adolescence. But far from being a hindrance, the institutional bubble led to an unusual lack of self-consciousness that has enabled Alison to go on to a rich, fulfilling and very ‘normal’ life (whatever that may be).

As their special guest on 22nd November, Alison will speak about her mission to break down the barriers between those people with disabilities and those without - and why our differences should be used to unite rather than divide our society in the future.

Alison's talk will be complemented by fabulous songs, readings and our regular science slot - all on the theme of 'Differences'.

Plus copious amounts of tea & cake afterwards.

The Sunday Assembly is a worldwide network of non-religious gatherings which aims to uplift and inspire through readings, talks, silent contemplation and classic pop songs. Oh, and there’s tea and cake!

There is no charge to come along and people of all backgrounds, faiths or no faiths are welcome. We are nearly all human and that should be enough to unite us in collective appreciation of our sheer existence.

The venue is the beautiful St Andrew's Church on Waterloo Street, Hove, BN3 1AQ
